Mozart's Piano Sonata No. 8 in A minor, K. 310
The A minor sonata dates from 1778, in the middle of an extended tour that took in Munich, Augsburg, Mannheim and Paris. Minor keys generally drew something intense and dramatic from Mozart, and the opening of this sonata creates a dark, pulsating energy that carries right through the movement. The middle movement is a song-like andante that presents a haven of calm, although dark clouds threaten its brief, developmental middle section. Urgency returns in the closing movement, a rapid A minor presto whose tension is only temporarily relieved by a sweet A major interlude.
This recording is performed by Ronan O'Hora, piano.
